Where to Begin

Identifying The Needs Of Your Community And Your Interests

Before you begin searching for a volunteer opportunity for your group, you need to assess what you are interested in and what you are capable of doing to help a particular community need.  Don't be hasty in selecting a project or organization.  Take your time to learn about groups, ideas, and causes that interest you.

Think for a moment about the need of your community.  What are the problems that affect your neighborhood, your school, and your city?  Do these issues concern you?  Do you know someone who is affected by an issue in your community such as cancer, AIDS, poverty, homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, healthcare, etc?  Figure out what issues concern you :

Substance abuse

Crime and violence

Peer pressure

School Dropouts

Limited Recreational Activities

Illiteracy

Homelessness

Pregnancy

Poverty

Pollution

Hunger and homelessness

Discrimination/civil rights

Crisis Intervention

The Arts

The Elderly

Breast Cancer Research

Leukemia and Lymphoma Research

Childhood cancer research

Animals/pets

Special needs children or adults

HIV/AIDS

Diabetes Research

Alzheimer's Research

Urban renewal

There are many more needs in your community besides the ones listed above.  Can you think of any more?  Are your concerns the same as others in the community?  Is there a group out there already who is helping to alleviate the community issue?  Who are those people whose needs are often neglected or overlooked?

How exactly can you help?  Think of the skills and knowledge that you have that you can share with others.  What are your interests?

others?

One of the best tools for finding the right volunteer opportunity is to know yourself, know what you are good at, and know what you enjoy.  How might your abilities tie into your service project?

Ask yourself these important questions before beginning your search....

1. What are my interests or concerns in my community?

2. How much time do I have to commit?

3. What talents or skills do I offer?

4. What do I want to get out of my involvement?

5. Will I enjoy this type of service?

Don't limit your thinking.  There is a world of possibilities out there.
